History

Historical Sites abound in the Grampian Highlands. Artifacts range from prehistoric stone circles to medieval (and later) castles. Many attractions of this sort are within an hour’s travelling time from Saint Michael’s. Kildrummy Castle (13th Century), for example, is 30 minutes away; Corgarff Castle (18th Century) is 20 minutes away; Elgin Cathedral (13th Century) is 45 minutes away.

Other site of major historical importance are within 2 hours of the Centre. Culloden Battlefield (for example) is 90 minutes away, as is the Midmar Stone Circle.

Some historical sites are directly related to the Catholic Church: Scalan (a post-reformation ‘hidden seminary) is 20 minutes away; Pluscarden (a contemplative Benedictine Monastery) is just over an hour away; the Blairs Museum (reflecting the rich Catholic heritage of the area) is 90 minutes away.
